Cory Doctorow posted about how he can’t live in Canada because the Internet there is crap, and it made me wonder how many migrants consider this when deciding where to live.
Interesting that the quality of an Internet connection can have an effect like this. Of course, it is quite a different example, but part of the reason I don’t like going back to my parents’ house is that they don’t have a broadband connection, or even dial-up for that matter.

- Sea lions at wharf were cool. Chinatown was okay. I loved Japantown! Was surprisingly moved. On my way home now. Will miss the warm weather. #
- Apparently I just saw Rami from Project Runway here at the airport. #
- Walked around downtown San Francisco after midnight, but it was boring and just made me miss Tokyo. People I saw were annoying or scary. #
- Sigh. Wish I had thought to look for goth clubs sooner. How embarrassing. Feel like a failure. That’s what I get for straying from my roots. #
- I am at a hookah bar with Nicole. In fifteen minutes we saw two fights. Only a couple of blocks from the hotel the conference is in. #
- Went to the Castro with Tim and Michelle. I prefer Shinjuku Ni-chome. #
- With dilligence my paper and presentation turned out well. Was good to have some genuinely positive responses. Am more awake than should be. #
- Staying at a hostel. Very hot last night. Otherwise great. Very cheap. Discovered I forgot underwear this morning. Woke at 8. Am tired now. #

- It’s 3 a.m. and my trip to San Francisco for the big anthroplogy conference has begun. Currently on the shuttle to Chicago. #
- Sitting on the plane waiting to take off. Flight is about five hours long. #
